Jackson Generals News Release
Jackson, Tenn. - In cooperation with Major and Minor League Baseball, the Jackson Generals have installed extended protective netting at The Ballpark at Jackson for the 2016 season. Fans throughout the stadium's lower bowl will be shielded from line drives when the season starts on Thursday.
Up until this year, the protective netting at The Ballpark only extended from the start of one dugout to the other behind home plate. Now, it runs from one end of the lower bowl to the other all the way down to each bullpen.
There will still be opportunities for fans to get autographs and foul balls. Spots in the netting can be slightly raised and lowered before and after every game to allow fans to ask for autographs and interact with the players. While it protects the entire lower bowl from line drives hit in foul territory, it does not eliminate the chance for foul balls hit in the air to find their way to the seats.
"We're committed to having the best fan experience possible," General Manager Jason Compton said. "That goes hand-in-hand with having a safe environment for fans to enjoy as well. This is another step the team has taken this offseason to improve The Ballpark at Jackson."
At the 2016 Major League Baseball Winter Meetings in Nashville, Commissioner Rob Manfred announced, "Major League Baseball prides itself on providing fans in our ballparks with unparalleled proximity and access to our players and the game taking place on the field. At the same time, it is important that fans have the option to sit behind protective netting or in other areas of the ballpark where foul balls and bats are less likely to enter."
Major League Baseball's recommendation stated that all Major and Minor League teams are strongly encouraged to add netting or other protective barriers to protect fans past the start of each dugout. With this recommendation in mind, the Generals decided to add protective netting that goes to the end of the seats down both lines.
