Gems Rally, Stun Bombers 7-6

It's baseball. Stuff like this happens over the course of the season.

That was probably the best lesson to take away from the Quincy Gems' stunning comeback victory over the Dubois County Bombers 7-6 at QU Stadium in Quincy, Ill.

The Gems scored six runs in the ninth inning off Joey McClung to erase a 6-1 deficit. He walked Gems left fielder David Kuhne to start the inning before retiring the next two Gems.

Then center fielder Gregory Allen hit a single, and shortstop Nick Moore walked. Up next was first baseman Zach George, who crushed a bases-clearing triple to left-center that grazed the glove of Bombers center fielder Austin Nyman.

The score was now 6-4 Bombers with Allen at third and the tying run at the plate in the form of designated hitter Nick Tindall. He popped up to the right side of the infield with what should have been the final out.

But it wasn't.

The wind carried the ball from first base foul territory toward the mound, and first baseman Jeff Zahn couldn't come up with it as the ball dropped for what was ruled a single. 6-5, Bombers.

The next batter, right fielder Brandon Brian, launched a triple to right center that barely eluded a jumping Nyman, and pinch runner Joe Kelch scored from first. 6-6.

Gems catcher Kyle Upp ended a six-pitch at bat by lining a 3-2 pitch up the middle to drive home Brian. 7-6, Gems.

It was an unfortunate end to a game that saw nice performances from a few Bombers.

Ty Simpson started for Dubois County and worked six and one-third of scoreless ball before giving way to Devon Nelson in the seventh, leaving with two on and one out.

This was Nelson's first action as a Bomber, and he pitched well, working out of Simpson's jam to preserve the Bombers' lead, which was only 2-0 at the time. He pitched the next inning as well, allowing one earned run as the Bombers maintained a 5-1 lead.

Bombers shortstop Frank Rawdow went 3-for-5 and scored a pair of runs. Second baseman Dalton Rouleaux also had three hits, including a solo home run, and Austin Nyman had a two-out, two-run double.

All of this was bittersweet for Dubois County, however, as the Bombers fell to 12-3 and Gems improved to 10-5. The Bombers' lead in the division shrank to two games.

Dubois County and Quincy play again tomorrow night at 7:35 p.m. EST in Quincy.
