San Antonio Missions News Release

San Antonio rode the arm of starter Josh Geer to a 3-2 win over Midland Friday in front of a Used Car Night crowd of 6,788 at Wolff Stadium.

The RockHounds used the speed of leadoff hitter Billy Burns to take a quick 1-0 lead Friday. After leading off the game with a single, Burns stole second and then moved to third on a Geer balk. Two batters later, Max Muncy drove home Burns with a sacrifice fly to right.

San Antonio later responded with a three-run, third against Midland starter Nate Long. Reymond Fuentes began the rally with a leadoff single. After walking Casey McElroy, Long then struck out Jason Hagerty for the first out of the frame. That brought up Rymer Liriano, who tied the game at one with a double to right-center field. The Missions then took a 3-1 lead when both McElroy and Liriano scored on a Long (7-3) wild pitch. On the play, catcher Blake Forysthe's throw home to get McElroy sailed over the head of Long, allowing Liriano to score all the way from second.

The three runs turned out to be enough for Geer (3-7), who allowed just the first inning run on five hits and no walks, while striking out a season-high six over seven innings. In his last two starts, Geer has allowed just one earned run on 10 hits, while sporting an impressive K:BB ratio of 9:1.

Midland made things interesting in the top of the eighth against reliever Luis De La Cruz. With one out, Muncy scored Burns from first with a double to right. Fortunately for De La Cruz, on the play Muncy was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a triple. After Beau Taylor followed with another double, De La Cruz escaped further trouble by fanning Jefry Marte.

Lefty Frank Garces allowed a pair of two-out singles in the ninth, but nothing further, to pick up his fifth save of the season.

San Antonio (39-35, 3-1) and Midland (40-33, 2-1) continue their four-game series Saturday, with first pitch slated for 7:05 PM. Following the game there will be a special fireworks show courtesy of Bud Light. Leonel Campos (0-2, 3.22) will get the ball for the Missions, while the RockHounds counter with fellow righty Chris Jensen (4-6, 4.02).
