Orange County Flyers News Release

FULLERTON, Calif. (6/5/2009) - After notching their first win of the season on Thursday - a 7-1 defeat of the Victoria Seals - the Orange County Flyers are hoping that is the beginning of good things to come as they head to Calgary to play the Vipers - the same team they played last year for the Golden Baseball League championship.

While the Flyers got off to a rough start - being swept in Chico and Tucson and losing the first two against the Seals - they had the right combination they'd been seeking on Thursday and feel they are now on the right track as they get ready to come back to Orange County for the season home opener on Tuesday against Victoria.

Third baseman Julian Benavidez is leading the Flyers in the three main offensive categories, batting .342 with two home runs and five RBIs. Outfielder Shane Buschini has also found his power stroke with two homers and three ribbies. In addition, outfielder Travis Becktel is batting .333.

Pitcher Jesse Smith might have a 5.06 ERA, but has a 1-2 record and is leading the team with 17 strikeouts in 16 innings pitched. Matt Durkin is also throwing well. With an 0-1 record, Durkin has pitched 11.1 innings and has whiffed seven batters.

The Flyers will make their 2009 home debut at Cal State Fullerton's Goodwin Field at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9 against Victoria. This is the night where the Flyers will raise the Championship Flag, pass out rings and have a fireworks show immediately following the game.

Tickets for the season opener - along with every exciting game, - are available on their website www.orangecountyflyers.com or by calling 714/526-8326. The Flyers will also be webcasting every home and away game at that same website.
