Biloxi Shuckers News Release
PEARL, MS - Bolstered by five scoreless innings from their new starter, the Biloxi Shuckers (50-49, 16-16 2nd Half) held down the Mississippi Braves (47-54, 18-14 2nd Half) in a 5-3 win on Saturday night at Trustmark Park.
In his Double-A debut, LHP Robert Gasser (W, 1-0) struck out a batter in each of his first two frames and added on two more punchouts in the third, part of three scoreless frames to open his night. LHP Dylan Dodd (L, 0-2) answered with three scoreless frames of his own to begin the game for Mississippi.
The Shuckers broke the deadlock in the fourth. Garrett Whitley singled to right with one out and went first-to-third on a single up the middle by Tristen Lutz, putting men on the corners with just one out. Cam Devanney drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly to right, making it 1-0 Biloxi.
Biloxi added on another run in the top of the fifth with a two-out rally. Terence Doston roped a single into right and raced around to score on a double to deep left by Corey Ray, widening the Shuckers' margin to 2-0.
Gasser finished off his night by throwing five scoreless innings, scattering two singles and two walks while striking out five for the Shuckers, throwing 69 pitches, 44 of them for strikes.
Mississippi scored a run in the home half of the sixth on a double and two singles, but RHP Luis Contreras (H, 3) stranded the tying run at second base to close out his inning.
In the top of the seventh, LHP Lisandro Santos issued four consecutive walks, forcing in a run to make it 3-1 Shuckers. An RBI fielder's choice by Lutz pushed Biloxi's lead to 4-1 and a sacrifice fly from Yeison Coca in the eighth gave the Shuckers a 5-1 advantage.
RHP Nash Walters (H, 9) pitched two scoreless, hitless innings for Biloxi, covering the seventh and eighth innings. The M-Braves scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, but RHP Cam Robinson (S, 3) entered for the Shuckers and secured the final two outs, locking down his third Double-A save and Minor League leading 22nd overall this season.
With the series already secured, Biloxi concludes their six-game tilt against the Mississippi Braves on Sunday afternoon at Trustmark Park. RHP Victor Castañeda (1-5, 4.01) takes the mound for Biloxi while the M-Braves have not named a starter for a 2:05 pm first pitch.
