
Gasper Re-Signs with Mallards; Townsend Inks Tryout Agreement

MOLINE, Ill. (September 16, 2010) - The Quad City Mallards of the "AA" Central Hockey League today announced they have re-signed center/right wing Joel Gasper and have agreed to a contract with defenseman Tyler Townsend. Per club policy, no terms were announced.
Gasper, 26, scored 14 goals and totaled 32 points in 76 games while serving as a Mallards alternate captain last season. The Mallards originally acquired Gasper last September in a trade with the Flint Generals.
"Joel is an experienced leader who played well for us last season," said Mallards Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Frank Anzalone. "He's a solid two way player who gives us flexibility at center or right wing. We look to him to be a presence both in the dressing room and on the ice."
Gasper broke into pro hockey by playing nine games with the ECHL's Johnstown Chiefs in the spring of 2008 immediately after completing his college career at Robert Morris. The Crookston, Minnesota, native spent the bulk of the 2008-09 season with Flint after starting the year with the Port Huron Icehawks. The 6' 2", 205-pound Gasper recorded 11 goals and 30 points in 67 total games during that campaign. In 115 career games at RMU Gasper notched 12 goals and 37 points.
Townsend, 24, played in Germany last season. The Tavistock, Ontario, product scored once and totaled 17 points in 47 games with Freiburg EHC. Townsend made the move to Europe after skating for Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario the prior two years.
"Tyler is a very good skater with excellent hockey strength. He is also a good passer who has good vision. He is a great candidate to help us on the power play," said Anzalone. "He gained great experience last season playing in the German Bundesliga, the second highest level of pro hockey in Germany."
Gasper and Townsend join Obi Aduba, Phil Axtell, David Brown, Mike Byrd, Nick DeCroo, Dustin DeGagne, Jason Dolgy, Mark Ehl, Mike Hartwick, Pat Inglis, Tyler Kindle, Kirill Kitsyn Jason Kostadine, Patrik Levesque, Shane Lovdahl, Brandon Marino, Maxime Mathieu, Mike McLean, Darren McMillan, Greg Moore, Omar Pacha, Ryan Palmer, Zach Pearson and Michel Robinson to bring the number of players on the Mallards' preseason roster to 26.
The Mallards will open their first CHL regular season on home ice Saturday, October 16, at 7:05 p.m. against the Odessa Jackalopes.
