March 31, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
GLENDALE, AZ - The Central Hockey League (CHL) announced today that Garett Bembridge of the Denver Cutthroats has been named the recipient of the 2013-14 Central Hockey League Most Valuable Player award along with winning the Joe Burton Scoring Championship. The MVP award goes to Bembridge following balloting among CHL head coaches, communications departments and selected media members in CHL markets
The MVP honor is "Ëpresented annually to the Central Hockey League player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team' and is determined through balloting of CHL coaches, communications staff members and selected media members in each market. The Joe Burton award is given annually to the league's leading scorer and is presented in honor of Joe Burton, the CHL's career leader with 985 points accumulated over 11 seasons with the Oklahoma City Blazers and the first person inducted into the CHL Hall of Fame.
Bembridge becomes the first Cutthroats player to win each award (team began in the 2012-13 season) finishing the season as the only CHL player to reach the 100-point plateau. The Melfort, Saskatchewan native finished the 2013-14 campaign with 104 points while also finishing as the league leader with 42 goals, 17 power play goals, 348 shots and was tied for the lead with nine game winning goals.
The veteran forward won the MVP award after earning the vote on more than half of the 41 ballots retuned (22 votes). Tulsa's Ben Gordon finished second in the voting with earning eight votes. The other finalists for the MVP award were Rapid City's Jesse Schultz, Denver's Troy Schwab and Missouri's Sebastien Thinel.
Bembridge jumped into the lead in league scoring in mid-November and never looked back. His 104 points were eight more than teammate Schwab who finished second in scoring with 25 goals and 71 assists (96 points).
