The Indiana Fever returned to action following the FIBA World Cup break on Friday, and defeated the Toronto Tempo, 103-85. The Fever head back to Indianapolis for a clash with the playoff-bound Washington Mystics on Sunday as the race for home court advantage continues.
The Fever offense was clicking on Friday - Indiana's 103 points against the Tempo marked its 20th game scoring 100 or more points this season. Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell combined to score 61 points, and Mitchell's 33 points brought her season total to 1,034 points. She became just the second player in WNBA history to notch 1,000 points in a single season, and set a new league record.
Clark's rhythm from her gold medal run with USA Basketball carried into Friday's game as she recorded 28 points and dished out 14 assists. Indiana will lean on its backcourt punch to deliver another blow on Sunday as it lines up against the Mystics.
Washington currently sits at seventh place in the WNBA's overall standings, and resumed its regular season with a win over the Chicago Sky, 110-80, on Thursday. Washington played without All-Star guard Sonia Citron who was out due to personal reasons. The Mystics' paint pairing of Shakira Austin and Kiki Iriafen dominated the Sky as Austin scored 20 points to lead all scorers. Iriafen notched 18 points and 11 rebounds to complement Austin's productive showing.
The Fever are the Mystics' toughest test left on their schedule as Washington closes its season with Connecticut and Chicago at home following its clash with the Fever. Indiana closes with two matchups against the league-leading Minnesota Lynx - one at Gainbridge Fieldhouse and another in Minnesota. A win on Sunday to maintain momentum and rhythm would go a long way in helping the Fever secure home court advantage for the rapidly approaching WNBA playoffs.
