Game Day with Shawinigan
February 1, 2011 - Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL)
Lewiston MAINEiacs News Release
Another Comeback
On Sunday afternoon, the Lewiston MAINEiacs got off to a bit of a slow start, falling behind the Chicoutimi Sagueneens 2-0 early in the second period. However, the second half of the contest was significantly better for the home team, who received five unanswered goals from five different players for a 5-2 comeback victory. The win was the Lewiston's fifth this season when trailing by two goals at one point in the game.
Sags Left Seeing Red Hair
One of the goal scorers on Sunday afternoon was forward Cole Hawes, who was playing in his first game since sustaining an injury in Shawinigan on December 18th. The 17-year old also picked up two assists, giving him his first career three-point game. Furthermore, Hawes' tally was the game winner, making him the 14th different MAINEiac to score a game winning goal this season.
Players of the Week
Tonight's game features two players that were honored yesterday as the top two players in the QMJHL last week. Shawinigan forward Dave Labrecque earned the first star of the week, posting eight points in three games, including a five-point effort last Wednesday. Meanwhile, Lewiston defenseman Sam Carrier was the second star of the week, as he dished out three assists in two different games for a total of six points.
Three Different Games
Lewiston and Shawinigan have met up three times this season, and all three battles have been extremely different. The Cataractes started the season series with a 6-0 win on October 20th in Lewiston. Exactly one month later, the scene shifted to Shawinigan, where the MAINEiacs picked up a 2-1 overtime victory. 28 days after that, Lewiston earned another road victory, erasing a 4-2 deficit for a 5-4 win at Centre Bionest.
Head-to-Head
Tonight marks the 31st all-time meeting between the MAINEiacs and Cataractes, as well as the fourth and final battle between the clubs this season. Thanks to six wins in each of the last two seasons, Shawinigan has opened up a sizeable lead, winning 19 times to Lewiston's nine times, while the two teams have tied twice. The Cataractes have also won more games at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee, coming out on top nine times to Lewiston's five.
Who to Watch for
Forward Peter Sakaris has only been in the QMJHL for 13 games, but is quickly making an impact offensively. The 18-year old has eight goals, six assists, and 14 points, with five of his goals coming on the man advantage. Sakaris joins an already potent offense that features NHL draft picks Michael Bournival (MTL), Benjamin Casavant (WSH), and Dave Labrecque (PHI). Newly acquired defenseman Ryan Kavanagh leads the league in defensive scoring, while goaltender Gabriel Girard is in the top five in wins, goals against average, and save percentage.
