SAN DIEGO, CA (WPFL TICKER) San Diego opens its 3rd season of women's football on the road. For the first time San Diego will travel for game one but not far. The SunFire will meet in Long Beach on Sunday, August 3rd to play the Aftershock at Veteran's Memorial Stadium. 3pm game time.
San Diego and Long Beach have built a healthy rivalry over the past two years. It was the Aftershock that beat the SunFire in the AFWL championship game last season.
The AFWL has since been dissolved. Both the Aftershock and the SunFire are now members of the Women's Professional Football League.
The 2003 WPFL regular season begins August 2nd and consists of a ten game schedule for the SunFire. San Diego will play its home games at La Jolla High School. Last season the SunFire finished its 2nd campaign at 9-1, the best regular season record in the AFWL and Silver Cup Winners of the league. The SunFire returns with some key members of last year's squads and some impressive rookies. San Diego will play teams like the Long Beach Aftershock, LA Amazons, Arizona Knight Hawks, Houston Energy and the Arizona Caliente.
San Diego kicks off it's home season on August 16th, capping off a home and home against the Aftershock. Game time 7:05 pm at La Jolla High.
