3rd Season Kicks off this Weekend

August 1, 2003 - Women's Professional Football League (WPFL)
San Diego Sunfire News Release

San Diego, CA – Third time's the charm!! The SunFire's 2003 season kicks off this weekend! San Diego will travel to Long Beach on Sunday, August 3rd to take on the defending AFWL champion Aftershock. Check below for the complete game schedule and roster.

Last season San Diego spent the campaign in the start up AFWL, a league of teams based solely on the West Coast. The makeshift league was a temporary stomping ground for the SunFire and has been dissolved. "With the WAFL break up in 2001, our main goal was to have a group of teams to play, and we accomplished that by starting the AFWL," says Owner/GM Donna Fox. "Joining the WPFL was just a natural progression for the SunFire."

The 2003 WPFL regular season begins August 2nd and consists of a ten game schedule for the SunFire. San Diego will play its home games at La Jolla High School. Last season the SunFire finished its 2nd campaign at 9-1, the best regular season record in the AFWL and Silver Cup Winners of the league. The SunFire returns with some key members of last year's squads and some impressive rookies. San Diego will play teams like the Long Beach Aftershock, LA Amazons, Arizona Knight Hawks, Houston Energy and the Arizona Caliente.

Press passes will be available starting next week. The first SunFire home game is August 16th completing a home and home with Long Beach. Call 619-295-8649 for press info.
