Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA, ON - Ottawa Fury FC closed out an impressive week of play with a pair of 2-1 victories that now has the second-year club perched atop the NASL standings. On Wednesday, the NASL announced the Team of the Week that included three Fury FC players - Carl Haworth, Colin Falvey and Romuald Peiser - who all played keys roles in the club's impressive 10-game unbeaten run that includes a three game winning streak with all three victories coming within eight days.
Opportunities have been plentiful for Haworth this season, but the second-year pro had yet to find the back of the net this season. On Wednesday, Haworth broke the scoreless deadlock against the Silverbacks with some impressive footwork in front of goal before blasting a shot past Steward Ceus to give Ottawa the lead. The confidence from that goal set Haworth up to save the day on Sunday when he volleyed home a crossed from Ryan Richter deep into stoppage time to send Fury FC past the Carolina RailHawks 2-1 placing them in top spot in both the Fall and Combined standings. On Monday, Haworth was named NASL Player of the Week.
When Colin Falvey played in Charleston, Battery fans called him the Charleston Rock. Ottawa fans are quickly learning why he earned this nickname and could very well transfer that moniker to the 'Ottawa Rock'. Falvey's sound defensive play proves why Fury FC is one of the most difficult teams to break down in the NASL. And when all else fails, Falvey is happy to show how he's mastered the art of slide tackling.
Romuald Peiser continues to make a case for the NASL Golden Glove. After setting an NASL record for consecutive shutouts and shutouts minutes, the French keeper continues to make outstanding saves each match - none bigger than two first half tries from Nacho Novo including a powerful free-kick from close range.
The trio will look to extend their unbeaten streak Sunday afternoon in Fort McMurray when the travel west to face FC Edmonton who currently sit in second place in the NASL Fall standings, five points back of Fury FC. After the match against Edmonton Ottawa heads to Indianapolis to tackle Indy Eleven on August 8. Ottawa returns home for another three-game home stand to close out August against Minnesota (August 15), New York (August 26) and Tampa Bay (August 29).
