Fury FC Streak Halted on Late Goal in Indy
August 6, 2016 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA, ON - While the tight affair between Fury FC and Indy Eleven seemed destined for a 0-0 result, Don Smart played spoiler when he put the finishing touch on a cross from Dylan Mares deep into stoppage time to give Indy a 1-0 victory, halting Ottawa's winning streak at three games and ending their shutout streak at a respectable 368-minutes.
Saturday's win marked the first time that Indy Eleven have won on home field against Fury FC, who had a record of 3W-1D-0L in Indianapolis prior to the loss.
"It's very frustrating to put so much effort into a game like this and walk away with no points," said head coach Paul Dalglish. "It's disappointing to throw a point away in the end like this and we have to learn from it."
"We wanted to be patient tonight and wait for our chances which we did until the final play of the game. Overall it's very frustrating to come so close and lose the point but now we have to learn from it and move on," added Dalglish.
Both teams traded excellent scoring chances in the first half, but were unable to find the back of the net. Ottawa could have opened the score in the 13th minute when Eddie Edward made a great run on the right side, behind Indy's defense and delivered a ball across the face of goal but no Fury FC player was able to capitalize.
Indy also had a glorious chance in the first half when Zayed found himself on the receiving end of a perfect cross from former Fury FC midfielder Nicki Paterson, but he sent the ball over the net. Both teams went into the locker room scoreless after the opening 45 minutes.
In the second half, Romuald Peiser made two great plays to keep his team in the game, perhaps none better than his diving save against Souleymane Youla who made a great run behind Ottawa's defense but the French goalkeeper tracked the ball perfectly.
As the game was looking to end in a scoreless draw, Indy Eleven took home all three points in the second minute of stoppage time when Don Smart sent Dylan Mares' second-post cross into back of the net, giving his team a seventh straight win at the Michael A. Carroll Stadium and extending their home unbeaten streak to 12 games.
Fury FC will now look to their home field advantage to return to the win column when they host Jacksonville Armada FC at TD Place on Saturday, August 13 at 5 p.m. Tickets for Fall Season contests are available by clicking here, calling 613-232-6767 x1 or in person at the TD Place Box Office.
