Fury FC Reid Among 20 Best Young Talents in USL this Year

October 10, 2018 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Ottawa Fury FC News Release

OTTAWA - Adonijah Reid, Ottawa Fury FC's 19 year-old Canadian forward on loan from MLS club FC Dallas, has earned himself a spot in the 2018 USL 20 Under 20 ranking as one of this season's most promising young talents in the league.

It was with great anticipation that Fury FC fans welcomed young Canadian Adonijah Reid back to the club this past March. He had shown a glimpse of what he could do the year before, and with an exciting new structure and culture around him, fans and coaching staff were looking forward to see his development continue.

"We are proud to see Adonijah make good progress as a young professional by achieving this recognition," offered Fury FC General Manager Julian de Guzman. "He continues to add very good value to the club which allows him to grow in the right direction. More obstacles will come his way knowing he has qualities to make a jump to the bigger leagues and it's up to him to improve on his weaknesses and perfect his strengths."

In 2018 so far, Reid has featured in 28 matches, contributing over 1,765 minutes. His speed and agility have been disruptive threats for Fury FC, and his ability to break down defenses have been important for the Ottawa club. Of his four goals this season, three came on a sunny June afternoon against New York Red Bulls II where Reid's lively play earned him his first career hat trick, and the first in Fury FC club's history.

This recognition is another nod for the Brampton kid with bright potential. Reid was the first Canadian Generation Adidas player selected in an MLS SuperDraft. He was selected in the second round (40th overall) of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft by FC Dallas. In 2015, the 5-foot-5 forward won the Golden Boot award in League1 Ontario after scoring 20 goals for ANB Futbol in the third division of Canadian Soccer. That same year he also won the Young Player of the Year award.

The first Fury FC member to receive such acknowledgement, he could very well be opening up the path for more Ottawa players. "If this is Fury FC's first member to achieve this recognition, it won't be the last since we are big believers of growing young talents," concluded de Guzman.

Reid is one of the 20 young players selected by ballots cast by technical staffs across USL clubs and the USL Technical Committee. Players who were born following this year's cutoff of January 1, 1998, accounted for more than 1,000 appearances in the league this season.

With one last regular season match ahead of them, Fury FC will fight for their spot in the USL playoff picture this Saturday as they host the Charleston Battery at TD Place (KO 2 p.m.). With four clubs vying for the final two spots in the Eastern Conference all within four points of each other, the final week of action is sure to bring its load of thrills.
