INDIANAPOLIS - A 5'11", 202 lb., left-handed shooting defenseman/forward from St. Paul, Minnesota, former Northern Michigan University Wildcat Kyle Follmer signed with the Indy Fuel for the 2014-15 ECHL season, the team announced Wednesday. The Fuel's inaugural season marks Follmer's first year in professional hockey.

"Kyle is a rugged player who brings versatility to our lineup," explained Fuel Head Coach and Vice President of Hockey Operations Scott Hillman on Wednesday. "He has the ability to play both forward and defense...That will be very important for us this year."

In four college seasons at Northern Michigan from 2009 to 2013, Follmer tallied 15 goals, 67 total points and 194 penalty minutes in 152 career appearances in CCHA play. Prior to his collegiate career, Follmer racked up 41 goals, 106 points and 370 penalty minutes in 169 games played in the junior ranks for the USHL's Lincoln (NE) Stars and Sioux City (IA) Musketeers from 2005 to 2008.

Hip surgery forced Follmer to miss the entirety of the 2013-14 season, but he says, joining the Fuel is the opportunity he's been waiting for. "Last year was difficult for me, but I'm really excited to be in Indianapolis next year," said Follmer Wednesday. "This is a fresh start for me and a chance to prove to people that I can play at this level."

Hillman agrees, citing Follmer's powerful motivation. "[Kyle] has redemption on his mind, no doubt," said Hillman. "He's worked diligently to get himself ready for a great start in professional hockey and we're glad it's with the Fuel."

In 2014-15, the Indy Fuel, the proud "AA" affiliate of the NHL's Chicago Blackhawks and AHL's Rockford IceHogs, drop the puck on their first season in the ECHL. Season ticket packages for the Fuel's inaugural campaign are available now starting at just under $12 per game!
