Vermont Frost Heaves News Release

South Burlington, VT - The Vermont Frost Heaves defeated the Quebec Kebs 102-90 in their first meeting of the Champlain Cup Series today in Burlington. Vermont captured 10 Champlain Cups to the Kebs 3 in today's matchup.

The 2008/2009 Champlain Cup series between the Manchester Millrats, Quebec Kebekwa, and the Vermont Frost Heaves is a season long competition celebrating the 400th anniversary of both Lake Champlain and the great city of Quebec City. All games are intra-league games between the 3 participating teams and each team will play the other 3 teams in one home and one away game over the course of the 2008/2009 PBL season.

Points will be awarded as part of each game played in the series, and the team with the most points will be awarded the Champlain Cup in honor of their achievement. Points are awarded as follows:

- One point for leading at the end of a quarter (possible four points per game) - Two points for winning a half (possible 4 points per game) - Five points for winning the game - Total possible points = 13 per game

With snow swirling outside, Quebec jumped out to a quick 11-1 lead in the 1st quarter, but Vermont fought back to tie the game at 18 and the quarter ended with Quebec leading 24-22. The Frost Heaves came out smoking in the 2nd quarter and managed to close out the half with a 58-46 lead. The half ended with Quebec getting 1 point for winning the 1st quarter and Vermont getting 3 points (1 point for the 2nd quarter, and 2 more points for winning the half).

The second half seesawed back and forth with Vermont maintaining their lead most of the way. Quebec outscored Vermont in the 3rd quarter - 24-20, but Vermont outscored Quebec in the 4th 24-20 for the final score of 102-90. With Champlain Cup scoring in effect, both teams gained 1 more point for winning a quarter and split the 2nd half points 1 each because each team scored 44 points for the half.

Vermont was lead in scoring by Benson Callier with 31 points. Vermont's next game is at home on Sunday March 1, 2009 against the very same Quebec Kebekwa.
