Frost Heaves Go To 16-3 With Victory Over Rainmen

Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada-The Vermont Frost Heaves broke open a tight game with a 25-7 run to open the third quarter, then held off their hosts to defeat the Halifax Rainmen 103-89 at the Metro Centre on Wednesday night.

Dokun Akingbade led Vermont (16-3) with 21 points and 13 rebounds, while fellow frontliner Erik Nelson added 12 points and seven rebounds as the Frost Heaves outscored the Rainmen in the paint by 44 to 22. Other double-figure scorers for Vermont included Antonio Burks with 13 points, B.J. Robertson and Terrance Green with 12 each, Dwayne Lee with 11 and Markus Austin with 10. Vermont's leading scorer and rebounder, Issa Konare, did not make the trip due to a groin injury.

Jermaine Anderson scored 24 points and Eric Crookshank added 14 rebounds for the Rainmen, who dropped to 7-10.

Vermont plays the second in the two-game set tomorrow night, with tip-off at the Metro Centre set for 7:15 p.m. Atlantic time, 6:15 p.m. Eastern. The Frost Heaves return home for a 4:05 p.m. matinee with the Manchester Millrats on Saturday, Jan. 12, at Burlington's Memorial Auditorium. All kids 14 and under who wear a basketball jersey of any type will be admitted at the door for half-price.

The following day, also at Memorial, the Montreal Royal visit for a 2:05 p.m. tip. The Burlington High boys varsity will lead a food drive for the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf, so fans are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item to donate.
