Freeze, "Fearsome Frozen" stomp Stampede
April 3, 2006 - American Indoor Football Association (AIFA)
Erie Freeze News Release
The Erie Freeze defensive unit that is known as the "Fearsome Frozen" stifled the Steubenville Stampede by a score of 62-6 in front of 3,600 raucous patrons at the "Igloo" in the Tullio Arena.
The six points set a defensive record for the fewest points scored in an American Indoor Football League game. The victory ups the Freeze record to 5-0 atop the AIFL's Northern Conference.
Leading the defensive charge for a combined seven interceptions were Sam "Bam" Reynolds who picked off four and returned one for a touchdown and Chris Blackshear who each returned errant T.J. Wiley throws for touchdowns. Blackshear would record another pick while the "Secretary of Defense" Benjamin Roosevelt hauled in a "pick" of his own.
Reynolds would also lead the Fearsome Frozen with six tackles on the game while Roosevelt recorded 5 ½ tackles on the evening.
The Freeze built a 35-0 advantage after one half of play as "The Hulk" David Dinkins continued in his MVP ways. Dinkins ran for two first quarter scores of 7 and 14 yards and dazzled the "Igloo" with a highlight reel 35 yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
The Freeze's other two scores came courtesy of the Freeze's offensive line that gave Dinkins time and lanes to throw the football. "The Hulk" connected with "Mr. Incredible" Darmel Whitfield on two second quarter major scores from 36 and 6 yards out.
The Stampede would break Erie's shutout bid in the 3rd quarter with a Thunder Collins 14-yard touchdown pass from Wiley but the 35-6 score was the closest the Stampede would make the margin for the remainder of the game.
In the third quarter, Dinkins would find Manny Johnson for a 9-yard touchdown. The fourth quarter would see Dinkins run in another touchdown from one yard out. Combined with the Blackshear and Reynolds defensive touchdowns providing the 62-6 final, the Erie Freeze look forward to Friday night at the "Igloo" for perhaps the biggest game of the young 2006 season.
The Freeze take on the talented Huntington Heroes on Friday, April 7 for a 7 PM kickoff at the "Igloo" at the Tullio Arena. In what is becoming one of the AIFL's best divisional rivalries, the Heroes hope to avenge a loss to the Freeze by a score of 46-38 only two weeks ago.
For the Freeze to be at its best the "Igloo" needs to be rockin' and the help of the "9th Man" will be much needed.
Roosevelt Benjamin implores fans, "I'm a hometown guy and we really need the crowd to help us out at every game. We have the best fans, but now I want to fill the place and make it (The Igloo) an intimidating place for other teams to play."
Friday's contest marks the last home Freeze game for nearly a month before the team embarks on a grueling four game road trip. It's time for Erie Fans to step up and sell out the "Igloo" as they face a team loaded with Division I college talent from Marshall.
