Athens Falls to Snakes, Monroe Makes Up Crucial Ground

Athens, GA - The Athens Rock Lobsters fell 6-3 to the Monroe Moccasins on Tuesday night at Akins Ford Arena.
The tone was set 2:52 into the game with 44 penalty minutes from two fights between Michael Greco and Corson Green along with Jesse Lowell and Ethan Matchim.
Lobsters lit the lamp first through Carter Shinkaruk, who was moved up from the blue line to center. His redirect on a Joe Colatarci shot took a first period lead for the hosts at the 7:30 mark.
With less than two minutes to go in the first 20, good puck movement on the power play resulted in a top-shelf shot going in from Carlos Fornaris to tie the game at one.
That late goal in the first proved a good omen for the visitors in the second, as they outshot Athens 23-8 in the middle frame.
Fornaris netted his second before Michael Hagen Moe got on the scoresheet about a minute and a half later midway through the second.
In need of a goal to settle the nerves, Eli Lieffers rode the royal road with a pass to break Eric Neiley out. The veteran faked a stickhandle and lifted the puck over the shoulder of Chris Branch.
Both teams exchanged blows late in the second. First, Casey Gerstein was credited with restoring a multi-goal lead before Dustin Perillat popped one into the twine with a power play goal.
Athens never found its footing in the third period as they hunted the equalizer, and Austin Pick put the game away with a short-side shot past Carter McPhail.
Pick added salt to the wound with an empty-net goal to ensure all three points were heading on the bus with Monroe.
The Rock Lobsters (33-10-7-1, 116 pts) return to Akins Ford Arena on Friday, April 3 for Rodeo Night against the Indiana Sentinels.
