NAHL North American Hockey League

Fox's eight points captures Sher-Wood NAHL Offensive Player of the Week

Published on February 15, 2006 under North American Hockey League (NAHL) News Release

No team in the NAHL last week was more explosive than the Fargo-Moorhead Jets, who outscored their opponents 23-1 in a pair of games, and no NAHL player was hotter that Jets forward Phil Fox. He came into the week coming off a four-goal game and put together a second straight four-goal game to start the week. He also added another goal and three assists to capture Sher-wood NAHL Offensive Player of the Week honors for the week ending February 12.

On Friday, February 10, the Jets clobbered the Billings Bulls 13-0, the single highest goal total by a team this season and Fox notched the third, fifth, tenth and twelfth goals by the Jets. He also set up another goal. All his points came at even strength.

The next night, Fargo-Moorhead hammered the North Iowa Outlaws 10-1 and the Stillwater, Minnesota, native set up the first, scored the second and assisted on the third goals of the game, all inside the first 14 minutes of the opening period.

In the process, Fox tied former teammate Chris Myhro for the most goals in Jets' history with 55. Last week, he became the team's all-time leading scorer. He is tied for 10th in the NAHL with 55 points so far this season (in only 35 games), and tied for fifth in NAHL goal scoring with 28.

This is the second Player of the Week award for Fox this season. He was also honored for the week ending December 4.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Kyle Kraemer (Wichita Falls), Mike Montgomery (Southern Minnesota), Ben Noah (Bismarck), Tom Train (Texas).

BILLICK BACKSTOPS WAY TO SHER-WOOD NAHL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

With the Santa Fe Roadrunners pressing them from behind, and the Springfield Jr. Blues threatening to pull away, the South Division's fourth place Wichita Falls Wildcats needed a big weekend and got it, backstopped by their veteran goaltender Thomas Billick. His two-game performance against the Wasilla Spirit earned the nod as the Sher-Wood NAHL Defensive Player of the Week award for the week ending February 12.

Billick won both games against the Spirit, giving up just one goal and gaining a shutout as the Wildcats put some space between themselves and Santa Fe and drew closer to the Jr. Blues.

On Friday, February 10, Billick stopped 20 of 21 shots, surrendering only an early second period goal to Wasilla's Mike Glaesmer as the Wildcats and protecting a 2-1 lead until late in the game when the ‘Cats got a pair of empty net goals. Billick stopped 10 third period shots as the Spirit pressed to get the equalizer, but were halted by the St. Louis, Missouri, native. In the process, he allowed no power play goals in five attempts.

On Saturday, Billick turned back all 23 Wasilla shots, as the Wildcats rode Kyle Kraemer's hat trick and one assist to a 5-0 win. For the goaltender, it was his third shutout of the season, which ties him for the fifth best mark in the NAHL. He helped the Wichita Falls penalty killers stop the Spirit on all six power plays.

Billick, who has played more minutes than all but three other goaltenders in the league this season, has lowered his goals against average to 2.86, 10th best mark in the NAHL and his save percentage is now .902 for the season.

HONORABLE MENTIONS: Jeff Carlson (Southern Minnesota), Peter Kavaya (Southern Minnesota), David Larson (Fargo-Moorhead), Troy Redmann (Texas).
