Fowles and Toliver Named WNBA Players of the Week
Published on August 19, 2013 under Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) News Release
NEW YORK - Sylvia Fowles of the Chicago Sky and Kristi Toliver of the Los Angeles Sparks were named the WNBA's Eastern and Western Conference Players of the Week, respectively, for games played Monday, Aug. 12 through Sunday, Aug. 18.
Fowles' 13.3 rebounds per game led all WNBA players last week by at least three rebounds. She was also the Eastern Conference's second leading scorer, averaging 19.3 points in the Sky's three games. This marks the seventh Player of the Week award of her career.
In an 80-76 loss in Los Angeles on Aug. 13, Fowles scored 22 points for her sixth 20-plus-point game of the season while adding nine rebounds. On Aug. 15 in Seattle, she recorded her 11th double-double of the season, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in Chicago's 79-66 victory. To help defeat Connecticut on Aug. 18, Fowles scored 20 points while pulling down a game-high 21 rebounds, including a franchise-record 14 in the first half. The effort marked Fowles' second 20-20 performance this season, as well as the second in Sky history. She became the only player in WNBA history to achieve the feat twice in one season, and is one of only two players averaging a double-double this year.
Toliver's 21.5 points per game last week ranked second in the Western Conference and third league-wide. She also tied for the league lead in free throw percentage, shooting 100 percent from the line across Los Angeles' two games. This is the second Player of the Week award of her career.
On Aug 13, Toliver scored 15 points, dished out four assists and grabbed four rebounds in the Sparks' 80-76 victory over Chicago. In an Aug. 16 win over Indiana, she scored 16 points in the first quarter en route to a game-high 28, one shy of her career high. Toliver shot 11-for-15 from the floor in the Sparks' 94-72 win.
Other candidates for WNBA Players of the Week were Atlanta's Angel McCoughtry in the East, as well as Minnesota's Seimone Augustus and Maya Moore, Seattle's Shekinna Stricklen and Tulsa's Elizabeth Cambage in the West.
