Fort Worth Named ABA's 19th Expansion Team
Published on May 5, 2004 under American Basketball Association (ABA) News Release
Indianapolis, IN. Joe Newman, ABA Co-Founder, today announced that Ft. Worth, Texas has joined the fast-growing professional basketball league as the 19th expansion team scheduled to begin play in November. According to Newman, "Having a team in Texas is very important to our plans as it provides the perfect bridge from Mexico to our US central teams. Texas is too great a basketball state not to have an ABA team. Expansion there is long overdue."
Newman added, "And we are fortunate to have a tremendous owner there, a very interesting guy, Charles "Choppa" Key, CEO and President of Deep South Tycoons Entertainment. The ABA combines both sports and entertainment and we feel that Charles brings to the table a set of skills that will impact the entire league. We're delighted to have him with us - you're going to see some "razzle dazzle" in Ft. Worth."
When asked about the name Deep South Tycoons Entertainment, Key replied, "Deep South represents Texas and my Louisiana roots. Tycoons came from my love of the board game Monopoly. The tycoon playing piece represents wealth, he stands out as a business magnet, he's known as a tycoon. I wasn't born wealthy. But my mother's influence and inspiration told me I could achieve anything with hard work and commitment. My success in the military, in business (real estate) and entertainment - and hopefully now in the sports business is the result of that hardwork and commitment. We hope to set a very high standard with our team for the ABA and I'm honored to be a part of the league."
Additional information about the team, name, personnel, venue, tryouts etc. will be released shortly. For more information, email Charles Key at igotdmoney@aol.com or call (214) 914-0509 or log onto www.abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
