Fort Lauderdale CF is opening the final month of the 2021 regular season with a road game against the reigning champions Greenville Triumph SC on Friday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. ET at Legacy Early College. The match will air on ESPN+.
"All eyes are on Greenville on Friday. We know we have a good squad that is ready going into these last five games of the season," said head coach Darren Powell. "Greenville is obviously the champion of the league. They're obviously trying to get into the playoffs as well..We know they are a very good team, very well coached, very well organized...We have to make sure we're prepared to make sure we give the best version of ourselves."
Greenville Triumph SC is coming off of a 1-1 draw against Forward Madison FC on Sept. 25 after forward Lachlan McLean scored a late goal for the Triumph that leveled the game.
Similarly, Fort Lauderdale CF is coming off a 2-2 draw against South Georgia Tormenta FC. In the September matchup, Mitch Curry and George Acosta contributed with a goal each, while Acosta's goal was assisted by Shaan Hundal for his second assist of the season.
Fort Lauderdale previously defeated Greenville 2-0 in the Aug. 15 matchup at home. The team was led by Shaan Hundal and Mitch Curry, who both made their presence known on the pitch, each scoring a goal in the second half. In addition, goalkeeper Drake Callender helped the squad maintain the clean sheet in a strong defensive effort that allowed for the offense to create opportunities to score.
Greenville Triumph SC is currently in fourth place in USL League One with 32 points from eight wins, seven losses and eight draws. The team is currently on a four-game unbeaten streak. So far this season for the 2020 USL League One champions, forward Mario Lomis is ranked second in the league in goals with 12. Greenville is also tied in first place with eight clean sheets.
