Former Yankee Catcher Rick Cerone To Speak At Annual Celebrity Breakfast

DANBURY, CT: The Danbury Westerners, the longest tenured team in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, are proud to announce that they will be having their 20th Annual Celebrity Breakfast on June 6th at the Matrix in Danbury, CT. The Annual Celebrity Breakfast welcomes the 2014 Danbury Westerners to the greater Western Connecticut community. In addition, the Westerners are thrilled to announce that Rick Cerone, former All-Star catcher for the New York Yankees, will be the keynote speaker at the Breakfast.

Paul Schaffer, President of the Danbury Westerners, commented, "Rick Cerone has had a successful career as an All-Star ballplayer with the New York Yankees and as an owner for the Newark Bears. He is also well known for his philanthropy. He will continue our tradition of exceptional speakers at our Breakfast, and I'm sure our guests will enjoy listening to him."

At the Breakfast the Westerners will once again present the annual Michael Seri Award in honor of the late Michael Seri, for perpetuating community partnerships, dedication and sportsmanship on behalf of the Danbury Westerners. The first recipient in 2009 was Mr. Seri. Other past honorees include Bart Busterna, Mary Ann Frede, Richard Reimold, Gene Eriquez, Charlie Coakley, Chris Arconti and Bill Pullan.

About Rick Cerone

Rick Cerone is a former Major League Baseball catcher, playing from 1975 to 1992 for the Cleveland Indians, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves, Milwaukee Brewers, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, and Montreal Expos. During his career Cerone had 998 career hits, including 59 home runs. In 1980 Cerone hit .277 with 14 home runs and 85 RBIs, was selected to the All-Star team, and finished the season seventh in the MVP voting.

In 1998, Cerone founded the Newark Bears, a minor league ball club in the Atlantic League and was the driving force behind the development of the Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark. Cerone ultimately sold the team in 2003.

More recently Cerone has been proactive in helping many charities and causes throughout the past decades. His help in raising awareness and funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's (JDRF) Northern New Jersey and Rockland County Chapter earned him their Man of the Year honors in 2011.
