Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

It's been a big couple of weeks for former Wheat Kings netminder Logan Thompson, who made his National Hockey League debut Wednesday night.

With the Vegas Golden Knights trailing 4-1 against the Minnesota Wild, Knights Head Coach Pete DeBoer pulled starting goalie Marc-Andre Fleury giving Thompson the net for the remaining 11:39 left in regulation.

The change seemed to work, sparking the Knights who scored two unanswered goals before ultimately falling to the Minnesota Wild 4-3. Thompson stopped both shots he faced.

Thompson's first action in a NHL game comes on the heels of a very successful February spent playing for the Knights' American Hockey League affiliate, Henderson Silver Knights. The 24 year-old was named the CCM/AHL Goaltender of the Month after posting a 4-1 record in February, never allowing more than two goals-against in all five games he started and registering a 1.81 GAA and a .942 save %.

Thompson signed an entry-level contract with the Golden Knights in July of 2020 and after backstopping the Silver Knights for the beginning of the AHL season, backed up Fleury for the first time on February 27th. He has since been a member of the Knights' taxi squad.

Thompson's recent success is the culmination of a road less travelled. After playing 3 seasons with the Wheat Kings from 2015 to 2018, Thompson spent the 2018-19 season playing Usports for the Brock Badgers, Canada's interuniversity league. In the same season, he played 8 games for the ECHL's Adirondack Thunder and a single outing with the AHL's Binghampton Devils before playing the entire 2019-20 season with the ECHL's South Carolina Stingrays.

Despite Wednesday's loss, the Golden Knights (16-6-1) still sit atop the NHL's West Division with 33 points.
