Mahoning Valley Thunder News Release
BOARDMAN, Ohio - The Mahoning Valley Thunder is pleased to announce WR DeMarcus Mathes has signed with the Grand Rapids Rampage of the Arena Football League. Mathes becomes the first player in Thunder history to ink an AFL contract.
Mathes (6-0, 200, Missouri Southern St.) is the all-time leading receiver in Thunder history, recording 1,027 yards on 71 catches. In his rookie season in arenafootball2, he appeared in 13 games (all starts) for the Thunder before being placed on injured reserve after a week 15 injury at Louisville. Mathes recorded 17 touchdown receptions and was the first Thunder player in the history to reach 1,000 receiving yards in a season.
Mathes re-signed with the Thunder on October 13, 2007. The Thunder owns his af2 rights, meaning they are the only af2 team he can play for if he is released by an AFL team in 2008.
THUNDER HEAD COACH MIKE HOLD
"DeMarcus will make an immediate impact with the Rampage. His speed, athleticism and heart will not only help the team, but his impact in the community will also be noticed. Grand Rapids is getting a special player."
MAHONING VALLEY THUNDER TEAM STATEMENT
"The entire Thunder organization wishes DeMarcus the best of luck as he continues his professional career with the Grand Rapids Rampage. Not only is he a terrific talent, he is a fine young man. His contribution to the Thunder both on the field and in the community speak highly of his character.
The Rampage named former Georgia Force offensive coordinator Steve Thonn (ton) head coach on August 1, 2007 after suffering a 4-12 season in 2007. Despite that, for the first time in team history, two players were named to the All-AFL Ironman Team. Offensive/defensive lineman Winfield Garnett (Harvey, Ill.) and wide receiver/linebacker Jerome Riley (Los Angeles, Calif.) each earned the honor for the first time in their careers.
The Mahoning Valley Thunder closed out the 2007 Inaugural Season with three-straight home victories. Be a part of all the action in 2008 as the Thunder embarks on their quest to claim the ArenaCup9 Championship. Season ticket prices are more affordable and on sale now.
