Southern Illinois Miners News Release

MARION, Ill. - The Southern Illinois Miners continue to add depth to their bullpen with the signing of right-handed pitcher Tyler Davis.

He was a 21st-round pick of the San Diego Padres in 2007. Outside of a late-season promotion to the Triple-A Portland Beavers in 2008, Davis posted a combined 2.38 ERA over the last two years in the Padres organization.

"I am very excited to add Tyler to our bullpen this season," Miners Manager Mike Pinto said. "He has had great success along the way and has been a very effective ground ball pitcher. It really gives us another strong arm late in the game. This is a really nice signing for us."

In his debut with the Padres rookie league affiliate in 2007, he recorded a 0.83 ERA in 16 appearances, limiting opponents to a .215 batting average. He earned a promotion to Fort Wayne in the Midwest League where he put up a 1.13 ERA in six games, striking out seven with no walks in 8.0 innings.

In 2008 he had continued success with San Diego's Northwest League affiliate Eugene. There he put up a 2.42 ERA in 22 appearances. He returned to Fort Wayne where he had a 4.18 ERA in 22 games and finished 11 games.

Davis played his college baseball at the University of Hawaii where he was the relief pitcher on the 2006 All-WAC first team. He was used as a starter and a reliever in college, and served as the teams closer his senior year. He pitched for Hawaii's NCAA Regional team, falling to eventual national champion Oregon State in the regional final.

The Miners will begin the 2009 season in Evansville on Friday, May 22. The home opener is scheduled for Friday, May 29 at 7:05 p.m. For the latest news and updates, visit www.southernillinoisminers.com.
