October 25, 2014 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada)
Island Storm News Release
(Charlottetown, PE) The Island STORM announced today that 6'8" power forward/center Mike Williams has signed for the upcoming season.
Williams, from Camden, Alabama, played with the STORM during their inaugural season in 2011-12. He led the team in almost every offensive and rebounding category while finishing 11th in league scoring with over 16 points per game, 4th in field goal percentage at 50% per game, 2nd in total rebounds and 1st in offensive rebounding. Williams grabbed an astounding 22 rebounds in the STORM's first ever regular season game. He was 2nd in the league in double/doubles with 18. His best scoring game came on January 20th, 2012 when he torched the Oshawa Power for 29 points to go along with 10 rebounds. Williams was named a 1st Team NBL All-Star as well as a member of the All NBL Defensive team.
Coming out of high school Williams played in the prestigious McDonalds All-American game in 2004 and the Nike Hoop Summit game in 2004. Williams went on to play at the University of Texas before transferring to the University of Cincinnati. His best college season was at Cincinnati where he averaged 10 points per game on 51% shooting while grabbing nearly 6 rebounds per game.
Williams has played the last two seasons in Central and South America, winning the Liga Americas Championship in 2012 with the Pioneros de Quintana Roo of Cancun, Mexico.
"Mike coming back to play for us is just huge, there really is no other way to describe it," says STORM Head Coach Joe Salerno. "He is one of the hardest working most dominant inside players I have had the chance to work with. His ability to score the basketball from 17 feet and in is second to none. In my opinion he is one of the best post players the NBL has seen. To pair that with some of the talent we have on the perimeter is going to be very tough for opposing teams to defend. He will be an instant crowd favorite for his work ethic and blue collar attitude. This could be the final piece that puts us over the top."
Next action for the STORM happens this coming Tuesday evening at 7 o'clock at Three Oaks Senior High in Summerside when the team takes on the Saint John Mill Rats. All proceeds from this game go toward the "In our Backyard" breakfast and lunch program at Three Oaks with admission $5 per person. As an added bonus, the STORM are giving a coupon for a free ticket to the teams home opener on November 6th to go along with the $5 admission to the exhibition game in Summerside.
Season tickets and single game tickets continue to be on sale at the Eastlink Centre Box Office.
STORM Fans purchasing VIP floor seat season tickets or luxury boxes for the coming season will enjoy the Exclusive VIP Pre-Game Reception before each and every STORM home game at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino with a VIP Parking Pass for the first 70 STORM Fans purchasing 2 or more season tickets.
All STORM season ticket holders will receive an "Everybody Loves a STORM Day" Ice Scraper and an invitation to our exclusive STORM season ticket holder pre-season reception and mid-season reception to meet all the STORM Players and Coaching Staff.
