Former Lobos reunite with New Mexico Stars

New Mexico Stars News Release

Rio Rancho - The New Mexico Stars are proud to announce the signing of two former University of New Mexico Lobos', WR Roland Bruno and QB Donovan Porterie. Bruno and Porterie played together from 07'-09' and are excited to reunite in New Mexico once again.

Bruno has been with the Stars since their inception in 2012. "I know Donovan [Porterie] from our time at UNM, so I feel comfortable with him as a quarterback" said Bruno. "Kasey Peters was the Co-Offensive MVP, so I would love to have him back. But with him getting some looks from AFL teams, it is nice to know that we can bring a guy in like Donovan to take over and not miss a beat on offense."

Porterie was in the Detroit Lions mini-camp and OTA's, then spent time with the Fairbanks Grizzlies and Green Bay Blizzard of the Indoor Football League (IFL) after graduating from UNM. Porterie was excited when signing his contract today at the Santa Ana Star Center saying "I miss New Mexico. I played my college ball here and now my career has come full circle. When Dominic Bramante and Abe Hernandez reached out to me about playing here, there was no question in my mind about the answer. It was a simple yes!"

Hernandez has been working hard as the GM with both the new coach and revamped front office staff trying to make the Stars team even better than the playoff team of 2013. "I'm very excited to have Donovan and Roland on board for the 2014 season. It's amazing to have this level of talent available in New Mexico, and we will continue to look for players within our local communities" said Hernandez.

Coach Bramante said via a phone interview that "Porterie is a guy that has a resume that speaks for itself. From a D1 school (UNM), to the Detroit Lions, to the IFL, he has proven he is a winner every step of the way. Our goal is to bring in people we think have the talent to move up in the football ranks, and Porterie certainly fits that criteria."

Both Porterie and Peters will be attending the Ken Mastrole passing academy in Ft. Lauderdale, FL later this year. Mastrole was a quarterback himself, and spent time with the Chicago Bears in the NFL, as well as the Amsterdam Admirals and Scottish Claymores in NFL Europe. Most recently Mastrole has worked with Buffalo Bills QB E.J. Manuel and Iowa State QB Jake Rudock. "I liked Porterie the second I talked to him" said Mastrole. "You can tell a lot about someone just from talking to him. I've watched film on him, I've talked to him, and I think he can come in here and we can give him the tools to succeed this year and for years to come."
