
Former Big Leaguer Mitchell Returns to Bridgeport

(Bridgeport, Conn. - February 16, 2015 ) - The Bridgeport Bluefish today announced the signing of pitcher D.J. Mitchell. Mitchell enters his seventh season in professional baseball and second in the Atlantic League.
"It's great to have D.J. return to the club," says Bluefish manager Ricky VanAsselberg. "He was valuable asset in the starting rotation last year and we expect him to be an important part of the team once again."
Last year with Bridgeport, the North Carolina native started 27 games, recording nine wins with a 4.63 ERA and 110 strikeouts over the course of 155.2 innings pitched.
The 27-year-old has made two stops in The Show, pitching for the New York Yankees in May and July, 2012. In four Major League games, the right-hander recorded a 3.86 ERA and two strikeouts in 4.2 innings.
He began his professional career in 2009 with the Charleston RiverDogs of the Class A South Atlantic League after being drafted by the Yankees in the 10th round of the 2008 MLB Amateur Draft. He had an outstanding professional debut and was quickly promoted to Tampa of the Florida State League after going 4-1 with a 1.95 ERA and 42 strikeouts in just six starts and 37 innings. D.J. has also spent time with the Seattle Mariners and New York Mets organizations. In 164 Minor League outings (136 starts), the pitcher has a 62-43 record with a 4.15 ERA, four complete games, two shutouts, and 630 strikeouts in 828.0 innings.
Mitchell attended Clemson University and led the Cape Cod Baseball League in strikeouts during the 2007 summer for the Bourne Braves.
