Lancaster Stormers News Release
LANCASTER, Pa.-Right-hander Jerome Williams, a former starting pitcher for three different National League teams, has signed a 2011 contract with the Lancaster Barnstormers, it was announced today by manager Butch Hobson. Williams, 29, becomes the 22nd player under contract with the Barnstormers and the eighth with Major League experience as the club heads toward the opening of spring training camp on April 18th.
The Hawaii native signed with the San Francisco Giants as a first-round draft choice in 1999 and advanced steadily through their organization. At the age of 21, Williams made his Major League debut on April 26, 2003, losing to the Philadelphia Phillies before returning to Class AAA Fresno. He returned to the big leagues in June and reeled off back-to-back wins over the local rival Oakland Athletics later in the month, the second of which was a seven-hit shutout. Williams would eventually notch the victory in five consecutive starting assignments, a span in which he posted two complete games and an ERA of only 1.24. He would finish the year with a 7-5 mark and 3.30 ERA while posting quality starts in 13 of his 21 appearances and earned the opportunity to start Game Four of the NLDS against the Florida Marlins.
Williams spent all of 2004 with the Giants, winning 10 more games and was then traded to the Chicago Cubs early in the 2005 campaign. The slender righty went a combined 6-10 in 2005 and put together a strong September push for Chicago with a 2.40 ERA in six starts.
His last Major League experience came with the Washington Nationals in 2007. Since then, Williams has pitched in the Los Angeles Dodgers, Minnesota Twins and Oakland Athletics farm systems as well as a six-game stretch in the independent Golden League. He was most recently with Class AAA Sacramento in 2009, going 5-6 with a 5.58 ERA.
"Williams will be coming in as a middle reliever but may see time in the starting rotation," said Hobson. "I'm glad to have an experienced guy like Jerome on our pitching staff."
The Barnstormers open their seventh season of Atlantic League baseball at Clipper Magazine Stadium on Friday, April 29 at 7:00 p.m. Season ticket packages may still be purchased by contacting the team's executive offices. Individual game tickets are also on sale and may be purchased at the box office or by calling 717-509-4487.
