
Former Bees Competing in Caribbean Playoff Series

Burlington, IA (January 14, 2008) - Former Bees are among the key contributors to the leading teams in all three playoff runs in the Caribbean Winter Leagues. Champions of the Dominican, Mexican, and Venezuelan Leagues will go on to compete in final tournament to crown the Caribbean Champion for this year.
Four teams have advanced to the semi-finals in Mexico. Mazatlan swept Guasave in the opening round with former Bee Gabe DeHoyos (played with the Bees in 2004-05) earning a win and two saves in relief over just the four games. Mazatlan is currently tied 1-1 with Mochis in the second round. For the whole post-season, DeHoyos is 1-0 with a 1.69 ERA. He's allowed a run on two hits and struck out six in 5.1 innings. 1B Jolbert Cabrera (1993) hit .305 with three homers, 19 RBI, and 15 doubles in 56 games for Guasave in the regular season, but didn't appear in the playoffs. Earlier this month, the Cincinnati Reds signed Cabrera to a minor league contract with an invitation to Major League spring training. Culiacan beat Navojoa in the first round, but currently trail Obregon 2-0 in the second round. C Jonathan Aceves (1999) hit .204 in 39 games for the Tomateros in the regular season, but hasn't played in the postseason.
The postseason begins with round robin play in both the Dominican and Venezuela. Licey and Aguilas are both 9-6 to lead the DWL race. C Matt Tupman (2003) hit .293 in the regular season for Licey, but is hitting just .182 in the playoffs. He has contributed five RBI in ten games. LHP Carlos Perez (1993) has appeared in six games for Licey and has allowed two runs in 4.2 innings while striking out seven. LHP Arnie Munoz (2000) has been a standout performer out of the Aguilas bullpen. In nine games, he has allowed one run in 8.1 innings while walking one and striking out eleven. Cibao is just 5-10 in round robin play. RHP Jorge Vasquez (2002) has pitched 1.1 scoreless innings and RHP Carlos Rosa (2004, '06) allowed a run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning in his only appearances. OF Mitch Maier (2004) hit .293 in the regular season for Cibao, but is not on the playoff roster.
In Venezuela, Lara is 7-2 and Aragua is 7-3 to lead the round robin race. IF Tomas Perez (1994) played for Magallanes in the regular season, but joined Lara for the playoffs and is batting .241 with 2 two RBI and five runs scored. RHP Yovany D'Amico (2005-07) was 1-1 with a 5.25 ERA in 14 games for Lara in the regular season, but hasn't pitched in the post-season. C Raul Chavez (1991) is just 1-12 at the plate for Aragua in the playoffs, but on signed a minor league contract for 2008 with the Pittsburgh Pirates and will be invited to Major League spring training. RHP's Brian Bass (2001-02) and Kyle Middleton (2002) were key contributors for Aragua in the regular season, but haven't pitched in the playoffs. LaGuaria is just 3-6 in pool play despite a strong showing from IF Danny Sandoval (1999-00). Sandoval had two hits, including a double, and scored two runs on Friday and is batting .269 with three doubles, four runs scored, and a stolen base in the tournament.
In other minor league news, former Bees infielder Alejandro Machado (2001) signed a minor league contract with the Minnesota Twins and will be invited to Major League spring training. The Florida Marlins announced their minor league coaching staffs on Friday and will have two former Bees managing their farm clubs this year. Matt Raleigh played for the Bees in 1994 and tied the team record for home runs in a season with 34. He'll manage at Double-A Carolina this year and follow Brandon Hyde, who was moved to high-A Jupiter in the Florida State League. Hyde was part of the Bees MWL championship team in 1999. This will be his fifth season managing in the Marlins system.
