Newark Bears News Release
NEWARK, NJ - January 25, 2007 - The Newark Bears Professional Baseball Club announced knuckleballer Joe Gannon signed with the Chicago White Sox and right-handed pitcher Jeremy Hill signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Both will be joining their respective teams in spring training for the upcoming 2007 season where they will tryout for a position within the organizations.
Gannon has appeared in 61 games with the Bears from 2004 through 2006. During that time, the Buffalo, NY native has pitched in 327.1 innings, including 153.1 in 2006. In 2004, Gannon appeared in 20 games posting a record of 7-4 and was 10th in the league in ERA at 3.90. At The Den, he posted a 4-1 record and held opponents to a .196 batting average in 62.2 innings pitched. On August 17, 2004 Gannon threw the only no-hitter in Bears history shutting out the Somerset Patriots in Somerset 6-0.
Hill pitched for the Bears in 2006 finishing the season with a record of 7-5 with 3 saves in 56 appearances out of the bullpen, while finishing with a 3.62 ERA. During the season, Hill did not surrender a run from July 19 through August 6, a 12 game span. Already a former major leaguer, Hill appeared in 11 games with the Kansas City Royals in 2002 and 2003. He has a career 0-1 record with seven strikeouts in 10.1 innings pitched. Hill was originally drafted in the fifth round in 1996 by the Royals as a catcher.
"Every player comes to the Atlantic League in hopes to get noticed and signed to an affiliated team," said Bears General Manager John Brandt. "Joe Gannon and Jeremy Hill were hard-working individuals on and off the field. We are excited for the opportunity they have received and wish them the best of luck in spring training."
The Newark Bears will begin their ninth season at Bears & Eagles Riverfront Stadium on Tuesday, May 8 against the Bridgeport Bluefish. Fans attending all home games may park in the spacious parking garage located behind the wall in right field.
