Mobile BayBears News Release
Mobile, Ala. â The Mobile BayBears were beaten single-handedly by one of their original members Saturday night, in front of 3,651 fans at Hank Aaron Stadium. Gabe Alvarez, a BayBear in 1997, drove in all four runs in Birmingham's 4-3 victory.
Alvarez capped his big night with his tie-breaking eighth homerun of the season in the top of the eighth inning off of reliever Alan Webb. The blast came off the first pitch of the frame and ended up being the decisive run.
Webb (1-3) took the loss in the game allowing that one run in one inning of work. The win went to Scott Dunn (4-3) who threw two shutout innings of relief for the Barons
The BayBears scored first in the second inning using doubles by Jake Gautreau and Danny Bravo. After Birmingham tied the score at 1-1 in the top of the third, Rico Washington connected on his 12th homerun of the season. The solo shot made the score 2-1 Mobile.
The Barons took the lead in the top of the fifth as Alvarez doubled home two with a liner to left. However, Humberto Quintero would tie the score again with a two-out double to left scoring Bobby Scales.
Now trailing after Alvarez' homerun, the BayBears had a great chance to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth. Scales doubled with two outs and Bravo sent a shallow fly to right field and was robbed by a diving catch by Scott Bikowski to preserve the Barons lead.
In the ninth, with two out, Freddy Guzman reached on an error and Todd Donovan singled. But Jeff Bajenaru got Washington to ground out to first to end the game.
The BayBears and Barons will conclude their series Sunday night at 7:05. RHP Chris Oxspring (5-3; 3.52) will get the start for Mobile against Birmigham's RHP Kris McWhirter (1-3; 5.40).
