Forgettable Day as Saints Lose Franchise Record Ninth Straight 8-2 to Jackals

ST. PAUL, MN (August 17, 2014) - There are certain records teams never want to break and on Sunday afternoon at Midway Stadium the 2014 St. Paul Saints set a record for futility as they dropped their ninth straight game in an 8-2 loss to the New Jersey Jackals in front of 6,205. The loss marked the longest losing streak in the franchises 22 year history. The loss was also the sixth straight at home tied for the third longest streak in franchise history.

The Jackals scored the first six runs of the game and never looked back. Leading 2-0 in the top of the fifth the Jackals got to Saints ace, and the second best pitcher in the American Association, Anthony Claggett. With one out the Jackals loaded the bases on singles from Alonzo Harris and Jeremy Barnes and a walk to Joe Dunnigan. Harris came into score on a wild pitch to make it 3-0. Tony Caldwell made it 4-0 with an RBI single and Jon Talley finished the scoring in the inning with a two-run double which made it 6-0 and chased Claggett from the game. He went 4.1 innings allowing six runs on eight hits while walking one and striking out two.

The Saints managed just two hits off of Jackals starter Michael Antonini through the first five innings. In the sixth the Saints got a little spark when Evan Bigley singled, which extend his hitting streak to eight straight, and with one out Willie Cabrera continued his torrid homer pace hitting a two-run homer to left, his 10th of the season, to make it 6-2. The home run was the fifth in six games for Cabrera.

The Jackals made it 7-2 in the sixth when Harris reached on an infield single, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI single from Dunnigan.

In the seventh the Jackals loaded the bases when Talley doubled, Richard Arias walked and Dwight Childs singled. With two outs Harris collected an RBI single to make it 8-2.

The Saints set a second franchise record by hitting four Jackals hitters, surpassing the record of three that had been done six times, the last time on July 13, 2011.

The Saints head out on the road for a three game series against the Gary SouthShore Railcats at U.S. Steel Yard beginning Monday night at 7:10 p.m. The Saints send RHP Robert Coe (5-7, 6.38) to the mound. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
