Monroe Greenheads News Release
MONROE, LA: The Arena League and the Monroe Greenheads proudly announced today at Hotel Monroe, the hiring of Terry Bowden as Head Coach and Director of Football Operations.
"I have long respected coach Bowden and am thrilled to have him as part of The Arena League," stated league commissioner and Hall-of-Famer Tim Brown, "He is going to bring so much to the Greenheads both on and off the field."
Bowden, compiled a career record of 187-148-2 in 28 seasons as a collegiate head football coach. Upon his retirement from college coaching after the 2023 season, his 187 career victories ranked fourth among the winningest active NCAAD1A head coaches.
Although Bowden has turned around five programs during his illustrious coaching career, he is most remembered for his 1993 undefeated National Championship team at Auburn University. Auburn tallied a perfect 11-0 record and Bowden swept nearly every National Coach of the Year award including Walter Camp, Scripps Howard, Football News, Toyota and the Paul "Bear" Bryant Award. He was the first coach in NCAA D1A history to go undefeated in his inaugural season and went on to win his first 20 straight at Auburn setting an SEC record for a first-year head coach.
After Auburn, Bowden spent ten years utilizing his knowledge of the game and engaging personality while serving as the leading studio analyst for ABC Sports at Times Square in New York City.
Terry Bowden is a member of one of the most well-known and successful families in college football history. His father won 377 games and two national championships as the Hall of Fame head coach of the Florida State Seminoles and brother Tommy led the Tigers to eight bowls in ten years as the head coach at Clemson. In a feat not likely ever to be duplicated in college football all three Bowden head coaches went undefeated and were named the national coach of the year in the decade of the nineties. Together they have combined for 652 victories, more than any other family in the history of college football.
Coach Bowden lettered two years as a running back at West Virginia University where he carried the highest GPA on the football team and graduated magna cum laude in Accounting. He went on to get his masters degree in Athletic Administration from Clemson University and his Juris Doctorate at the Florida State University School of Law. Bowden also completed post graduate legal studies at Oxford University.
Currently, Terry Bowden hosts Bowden Ball, a weekly podcast on college football and remains a much sought after keynote motivational speaker. He and his wife Brenda share nine children and five grandchildren and reside in Monroe.
"Being named head coach of the Monroe Greenheads is such an exciting and unexpected additional step in my career. I am looking forward to working with GM Doug Parrish and these athletes as well as being involved in the Monroe community again," explained Bowden.
The Greenheads begin play for the 2026 season, the league's third, in late may with the team's inaugural home game on June 6th versus the Nebraska Siege at the Monroe Civic Center.
