St. John's Fog Devils News Release

The St. John's Fog Devils took part in the annual CHL Import Draft yesterday, selecting a pair of players. Mario Kempe of Sweden and Joonas Salmi of Finland are the newest members of the team.

The Fog Devils had the 19th Overall pick in the Import Draft but traded it to Chicoutimi for a 5th round pick in the 2007 QMJHL Entry Draft and the 31st selection in Wednesday's Import Draft. The club then chose Kempe, a 17 year old winger, who played for Modo of the Swedish Elite League last season and posted 20 goals and 12 assists in 36 games. He is widely regarded as a great skater with good hands and above-average intensity.

With its second selection in the Import Draft, 66th overall, the Fog Devils took defenseman Joonas Salmi from Karpats Jr. in Finland. Salmi is a good young defenseman with an offensive flair and the ability to play in his own zone. He is thought to be capable of quarterbacking a powerplay and, much like Kempe, is known for intensity and work ethic. He posted 3 assists in 7 games with Karpat last season.

The Import Draft saw all 59 Canadian Hockey League teams participate in a 2-Round Draft allowing the teams to select eligible European players. Each CHL team is allowed up to a maximum of two non-North American players on its roster and these players must be drafted through the Canadian Hockey League Import draft.

The Fog Devils open training camp in Newfoundland on Wednesday, August 16.
