Schaumburg Flyers News Release
FARGO, ND - The Flyers (19-28) won their fifth straight game, beating the second place RedHawks (26-17) 10-8 to kick off a four-game weekend series on Thursday night.
Schaumburg's first inning proved to be important by game's end and it propelled the Flyers to an early lead. Brandon Newton doubled to get the game underway. Then Travis Brown hit a chopper to short that RedHawk Zach Penprase threw away, allowing Newton to score. After Ron Bourquin walked, Joey Gomes notched one of his three RBI, singling through the right side to score Brown. Richard Mercado hit a sacrifice fly to left and, four batters later, Ruddy Yan sent a liner up the middle to plate two more, giving the Flyers a 5-0 lead.
Fargo-Moorhead got one back in the bottom of the first when Penprase's groundout scored Coles. Flyers starter Brett Harker (2-6) also made one mistake to Northern League home run leader Jesse Hoorelbeke, who launched one over the right field fence in the third.
But Schaumburg wasn't done. Gomes and Mercado each singled in runs in the fourth and the top of the ninth saw three more Flyers runs cross the plate to pad the lead to a five run advantage.
Harker went an impressive seven innings, allowing eight hits for four runs. Two of those came in the top of the eighth to cut the deficit to just two at the time, but reliever Joshua Giles forced Coles to ground out to second to get out of a first and third jam.
The Flyers got a bit of a scare in the ninth as Tom Lyons came on to close the game out. With two outs and a five run lead, Carlo Cota smashed a three run homer to cut the Flyers lead to 10-8. But after a Cory Patton single, Lyons struck out Kole Zimmerman swinging to end the threat.
RedHawks starter Jeremy Hauer (0-1) struggled throughout his outing, giving up seven runs on nine hits to put Fargo-Moorhead in an early hole that it could not climb out of.
The Flyers continue their four game set with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks at Newman Outdoor Field Friday night. It's a match-up of All Stars as Dustin Glant goes for the Flyers and Matt Mossey gets the nod for the RedHawks.
