Flyers Swept by Railcats

Schaumburg, IL- The Flyers (13-22) were swept by the Gary Southshore Railcats (25-10) for the second time in the 2007 season as the Flyers came up short in a 10-6 loss Sunday at Alexian Field.

The Flyers had just two hits from Demetrius Heath and Dario Delgado remaining scoreless through the first three innings.

The Railcats went to work right away scoring single runs in the first and second innings.

Flyers' righty Ryan Harris struck out two and forced Tanner Townsend to fly out for a scoreless third. The Railcats struck again in the top of the fourth scoring two runs off of four hits, heading into the bottom of the inning with a 4-0 lead.

Pat O'Sullivan started the Flyers off in the fourth with a single to right-center. Two fly outs later, Billy Malone singled to center. Catcher David Hoffman stepped up to the plate following Malone and sent the ball over the left field wall for his first career homerun. The Flyers ended the inning trailing by just one with a 4-3 score.

The Railcats did not keep the game close for long, using three hits and an error to score two more runs in the fifth, making it a 6-3 ballgame.

The Flyers were unable to get their bats going in the fifth and sixth, allowing the Railcats to maintain the lead. Flyers' reliever Jim Morrison entered the game in the sixth, keeping the Railcats to just two hits and no runs for two innings.

The Flyers took advantage in the bottom half of the seventh. Hoffman walked to start the inning off followed by rookie Mike Rohde who smacked a triple to the center field wall for his first career hit. Kyle Leon also had a hit but was left stranded as the Flyers ended the inning down, 6-5.

Jake Toohey had a rocky outing relieving Morrison in the eighth. Toohey gave up three hits with two wild pitches to allow the Railcats to earn four runs, making their lead 10-5.

The Flyers were scoreless in the eighth. Brandon Villafuerte entered in the ninth, pitching his way into a double play, shortly followed by a strikeout.

In the bottom of the ninth Rhode singled but Heath hit into a double play. Sandy Almonte sent a ball to the right field corner for a triple and then scored off a Leon single. The Flyers' rally ended with an O'Sullivan strikeout as the Flyers fell in a 10-6 final.

Ryan Harris took his fifth loss of the season while Joe Panozzo earned the win. Flyers' Billy Keppinger will take the mound Tuesday night, to look for a win an early win over Fargo-Moorhead.
