Flyers Rout League Leaders

July 13, 2009 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL- Craig Maddox hit a three-run home run and drove in four, every Flyers starter but one recorded a hit, and Carmen Pignatiello gave up one run in seven innings as the Flyers crushed the Northern League-leading Winnipeg Goldeyes 10-1.

The Flyers would score seven runs in the first four innings. After singles from Vince Harrison and Craig Maddox to start the second, Felix Jose drove in Harrison with a single. Jeff Dunbar then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Maddox.

In the bottom of the third Maddox hit his third home run, a three-run bomb to left-center, scoring Harrison and Richard Mercado with two outs.

The Goldeyes got their only run of the game in the top of the third on a Kevin West RBI single.

The Flyers continued in the fourth. Travis Ezi singled then stole second and third. Mercado walked and both came around to score on Victor Ferrante's double down the left field line to make the score 7-1.

Winnipeg's pitching staff continued to get roughed up in the bottom of the sixth. Mercado got a double on a generous hop from the edge of the infield grass. With Mercado and Ferrante on base, Harrison hit a shot off pitcher Jordan Stewart's glove that trickled into center field for a two-run double. Maddox then singled in Harrison to extend the lead to 10-1.

The middle of the game included much intrigue as Flyers' injuries forced some defensive shuffling. Jose Valdez and Travis Brown did not play due to oblique strains, so Stephen Yoo started at third, TJ Wilson at second, and Harrison at shortstop.

Then, Yoo moved to second, Wilson to left, and Jeff Dunbar moved to third base. Unfortunately, Harrison, who scored three runs and drove in two, left the game after the 6th with an injury. Starting pitcher Dustin Glant entered the game as the left fielder, moving Wilson to shortstop.

Pignatiello had all the run support he would need pitching a masterful seven innings giving up one run, eight hits, and striking out five, improving his record to 4-5 on the year. Mark Michael got the loss, giving up seven runs in four innings. Michael is now 0-2 this season.

Kris Jiggitts pitched two shutout innings, striking out five, to end the game.

Ferrante went 3-5 for the Flyers, driving in two. Kevin West led the way for Winnipeg, going 3-5 with an RBI.

The Goldeyes are now on a six-game losing streak as they fall to 28-22. The Flyers are now just four games behind the Goldeyes in the Northern League and are above .500 with a record of 25-24.

RHP Dustin Glant (5-2, 3.72) will take the mound for Schaumburg tomorrow, opposed by Goldeyes RHP Andrew Cruse (3-3, 5.07) at 7:05.
