Flyers Lose Big 12-1
May 23, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Schaumburg Flyers News Release
Loves Park, IL -- In today's series finale with Rockford, the Flyers tried to shake off last night's heartbreaking extra inning loss. At least, that was the hope. The reality was a 12-1 blowout delivered by Rockford, sending the Flyers (1-3) back to Schaumburg on a three-game losing streak.
The highlights were few and far between for the Flyers today and the Riverhawks dominated with a six run inning in the sixth and a five run effort in the seventh. Schaumburg starter Brett Harker (0-1) struggled, giving up seven runs in 5.2 innings of work. The righty gave up home runs to Rockford's Patrick O'Sullivan, Dan Austin, and Jake Eigsti.
That was the story for the entire Flyers pitching staff Sunday at Road Ranger Stadium. After pulling Harker, manager Mike Busch went to rookie Ben Reeser, who also struggled. The University of Illinois product allowed three runs in the seventh. Then James Lopresti came out of the bullpen and immediately surrendered Jake Eigsti's second home run of the game.
The Flyers collected just six hits today, the first time Rockford out-hit Schaumburg the entire series. The Riverhawks pounded out 14 base knocks - five of them for extra bases.
Leading off innings was a serious problem throughout the four-game set with the Riverhawks. The Flyers reached base just eight times in 37 innings. Ony Richard Mercado (third inning single) and Travis Brown (ninth inning walk) led off a frame by reaching base on Sunday afternoon.
One bright spot for the Flyers was OF Chris Schultz. After starting the season off with a 2-5 performance on Thursday night, the rookie struggled, going 0-8 in the next two games. Today Schultz had three hits in the game, tying him for the Flyers' season high.
Schaumburg has Monday off to recuperate. On Tuesday, the Flyers open up a three-game set with Kansas City as the team plays its first game at Alexian Field in 2010.
First pitch on Tuesday is scheduled for 6:30 PM and tickets are still available for the Flyers' home opener. The game also marks the first 2 for Tuesday, where Miller and Pepsi products are just $2.
