Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL - The Flyers (20-31) came out guns blazing in their first game back from the All Star Break with a 10-2 victory over the Gary Southshore RailCats (23-27) at Alexian Field Fiday night.

Schaumburg would strike early and often. The Flyers got the leadoff batter on in the bottom of the first after Brandon Newton was hit by a pitch. Newton proceeded to steal second, and then was driven in on a Travis Brown single into right.

The Flyers picked up another run in the second after Joe Nowicki scorched a triple down the first base line and was driven in on a Richard Mercado sacrifice fly to deep center.

The RailCats would tie the game back up, scoring runs in the third and fourth. In the third Mike Rohde scored on a Jeff Beachum single after being walked to lead off the inning. In the fourth, Tanner Townsend got the tied it up, sending a home run ball deep into the Miller Lite Party Deck in left. That would be the end of the scoring for the RailCats.

The Flyers would pick up another run in the fourth when Joe Nowicki scored off a Josh Burrus sacrifice fly to center.

Schaumburg really broke the game open in the fifth. Brandon Newton struck out with what would have been the second out, but the ball got past catcher Mike Valadez and Newton advanced to first. Travis Brown followed that up with a single. A Ryan Borquin base hit would bring home Newton and a Joey Gomes sacrifice brought in Brown.

The Flyers picked up three more in the sixth after back to back walks by Richard Mercado and Burrus. Tom Fitzgerald got on with a fielders choice that would keep men at first and second. Then an RBI single by Newton brought home Burrus and a Travis Brown double brought in Fitzgerald and Newton.

The Flyers tacked on to more in the eight off a Newton two run blast to left.

Brett Harker (3-6) picked up the win for the Flyers. He pitched seven strong, giving up two runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Tom Thornton (1-5) took the loss for the RailCats, pitching five innings striking out one, allowing six hits, and five runs.

The Flyers and RailCats will play game two of a three game series tomorrow night at Alexian Field.

The game is scheduled for a 6:00 first pitch. Join Alex Perlman on 1410 WRMN and flyersbaseball.com for all the action as the Flyers take on the RailCats. The Schaumburg Flyers Pregame Show gets rolling at 5:50 PM with the game to follow.
