Flyers Improve To Perfect 6-0 In Pre-Season

Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, IL- Andy McCauley's Flyers have reason to be optimistic after their 10-5 defeat of the Joliet JackHammers Tuesday night in an exhibition game at Alexian Field.

Geoff McCallum and Eddie Romprey finished with two hits and three runs scored apiece. Jason Fitzgerald and Eric Cole represented the heart of the order, batting in three and four runs, respectively.

E.J. Shanks was credited the win after 2.1 innings of strong relief work. He yielded only a solo home run to Joliet's Josh Loggins in the 7th inning. Jason Cierlik and Raymond Jenkins each pitched an inning of scoreless relief en route to the sixth victory in as many games in the preseason.

Despite some early offense from Joliet, the Flyers were able to keep pace and tie the score with a two-out single from Josue Lopez, tying the score at four. His single found center field after battling with a 3-2 count and batted in Eric Cole, who led off the inning with a double.

After Loggins' home run temporarily put the JackHammers ahead 5-4 early in the 7th inning, the Flyers were able to load the bases with no outs in the bottom frame. A sharp grounder off the bat of Fitzgerald was mishandled by Joliet 3B Jaime Spottz and bounced under his legs into the outfield. Ted Ledbetter and McCallum were easily able to score. An ensuing single from Cole moved the score to 7-5.

In the bottom of the 8th inning the Flyers again found themselves with the bases packed and nobody out. Fitzgerald provided the nail in the coffin with his one-out double, scoring two.

Cole again followed with an RBI single to cap the second three-run inning in a row.

Jenkins cruised in his 9th inning relief effort, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

The Flyers begin their 7th regular season in the Northern League with a weekend road trip to play the St. Paul Saints on Friday.
