Florida Fire Frogs News Release
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Florida Fire Frogs and St. Lucie Mets split their doubleheader at Osceola County Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, with the home team falling in game one, 4-3, and taking game two, 4-2. Florida is now 3-3-4 all-time in twin bills.
Game 1: St. Lucie - 4, Florida - 3
Florida (15-23) took a 4-3 lead in the sixth inning on a two-run single to center off the bat of Garrison Schwartz (1x3, 2 RBI), but Thomas Burrows and Sean McLaughlin could not lock down the top of the seventh, as the pair of relievers allowed two runs to score.
Burrows (2-2) gave up a one-out double to Andres Gimenez but struck out Desmond Lindsay to pull within an out of securing the victory. The southpaw got a ground ball to Ray-Patrick Didder as short, but the infielder misplayed the ball and had it carom off his chest. Gimenez never stopped running on the play, and scored ahead of the throw home by Didder to tie the game at three.
McLaughlin came on to face Luis Carpio, who blooped the first pith into right field to bring home Strom to put the Fire Frogs behind by a run.
Ryder Ryan (1-1) set down the side in order in the final frame to hand St. Lucie (16-20) the win in game one.
Game 2: Florida - 4, St. Lucie - 2
The Fire Frogs started the scoring early on an RBI single off the bat of Brett Cumberland (1x3, RBI), scoring Kevin Josephina (2x4, R, 2 RBI) for the 1-0 advantage against Michael Gibbons (0-2).
Jeremy Walker (1-3) allowed a two-out RBI single to right from Dash Winningham in the top of the second to tie the game at one, but Florida pushed across two in the bottom half of the frame to pull ahead for good.
With Didder at second, Marcus Mooney (2x3, 2 R) singled to right. Strom's throw to the cut-off main sailed high of its target, and short-hopped Anthony Dimino at the plate, skipping all the way to the backstop. Didder broke for home and scored ahead of Gibbons throw to give the home team their second lead of the contest.
After Cristian Pache (1x3, BB) grounded out to second, Josephina stroked a 2-1 pitch to right to bring home Mooney for the insurance run.
Walker surrendered another run in the third to cut the lead down to one, but the 6-foot-5 right-hander allowed just one hit through his remaining two frames for his team-leading, third quality start of the season.
Jon Kennedy (SV, 1) allowed back-to-back singles in the seventh to Winningham and Michael Paez, but got a retired Strom on a fly out to right to secure his first save of the season.
Florida will look to pull ahead in the four-game series in game three on Wednesday night at Osceola County Stadium. LHP Tucker Davidson (1-4, 8.04) toes the rubber for the Fire Frogs against the Mets' RHP Gabriel Llanes (2-4, 5.64). First pitch is scheduled for 6:31 p.m., with coverage starting at 6:15 p.m. with the Florida Fire Frogs Pregame Show on the Florida Fire Frogs Broadcasting Network.
