TODAY'S GAME: Game one of a three-game series against the Tampa Tarpons (NYY) at George M. Steinbrenner Field....Game four of a six-game road trip against the St. Lucie Mets (NYM) and the Tarpons (2-1)...Florida took two out of three against the Tarpons at Osceola County Stadium, May 4-6, and is 2-13 all-time against the New York Yankees Advaced-A affiliate...The Fire Frogs finished 0-6 at George M. Steinbrenner Field in 2017.
TODAY'S STARTING PITCHER: 22-year-old Tucker Davidson makes his seventh start of the season in game one of the three-game series against the Tampa Tarpons on Thursday night...The Amarillo, Texas native entered the 2018 season as the 13th- (Baseball America) and 23rd- (MLB.com) ranked prospect in the Atlanta Braves organization...The 6'2" southpaw worked a no-decision against the Tarpons on May 4, surrendering just one run on three hits, two walks, and a season-high, seven strikeouts in 5.1 innings...The product of Midland College tossed a season-high, 91 pitches, with 58 crossing the plate as strikes...Thursdaywill be Davidson's second career start against the Tarpons.
HERBERT'S HEROICS LEAD TO SERIES VICTORY: Lucas Herbert broke a scoreless game with an eighth-inning long ball, and the Florida Fire Frogs left First Data Field with a 1-0 victory over the St. Lucie Mets on Wednesday afternoon. The victory gives the Atlanta Braves Advanced-A affiliate their second consecutive series victory, and first win in a rubber match this season.
Florida scattered three hits through the first seven innings against Gabriel Llanes, but Herbert's one-out, solo home run over the wall in left provided the only offense on the day.
Jeremy Walker worked his second quality start of the season, as the product of Gardner-Webb shut out St. Lucie through six frames. The 22-year-old gave up three hits and walked two men, but also picked up a season-high, five strikeouts in the no-decision.
The Fire Frogs bullpen turned to Thomas Burrows (2-1) to work the seventh and eighth innings. The former Crimson Tide allowed two hits in his two scoreless frames. Justin Kelly (SV, 1) took the ninth and worked a perfect frame for his first save of 2018.
SMOKIN' ACES: During the month of May, Florida's starting pitching staff has been lights out through the first nine games...The combination of Jeremy Walker (2gs, 11ip, 3r, 1er), Tucker Davidson (1gs, 5.1ip, 1r, 1er), Joey Wentz (1gs, 6ip, 0r), Ian Anderson (2gs, 12ip, 0er), Bryse Wilson (1gs, 6.2ip, 0r), Dilmer Mejia (1gs, 4ip, 1r, 1er) and Kyle Muller (1gs, 4ip, 4r, 4er) have combined to go just 1-1, but have posted an ERA of just 1.29 over 49.0 innings (seven earned runs).
FIRE THE CANNONS: Lucas Herbert did more than just hit the game-winning home run on Wednesday...The backstop also nabbed all three attempted baserunners in the shutout...Florida's catchers this season (Herbert and Brett Cumberland) have combined to throw out 52 percent of attempted base stealers this season (22-for-42)...The closest team to Florida is the Fort Myers Miracle, who have caught 50 percent of attempted base stealers (14-for-28)...The worst team in the league is the Clearwater Thresers, who have managed to only catch 18 percent (7-for-40).
CUMBERLAND'S STREAK ENDS: Brett Cumberland (0x4) saw his team-leading, 13-game on-base streak come to a close in the finale against the Mets...The designated hitter reached on a fielder's choice in the first, but grounded out in the fourth, flew out to left in the seventh, and popped out to third in the eighth.....During the streak, the switch hitter hit .250 (11-for-44), but drew 11 walks...The 22-year-old leads the clubs with 15 walks on the season.
