Asheville Altitude News Release

Asheville, N.C., November 30, 2003 - Kareem Reid dished out a game high eight assists in addition to 10 points and five rebounds in the Asheville Altitude's losing home opening effort to the Huntsville Flight, 88-69, Sunday, at the Asheville Civic Center.

A close and sometimes confrontational battle for most of the game, the momentum shifted consistently causing eight ties and 10 lead changes. The Flight managed to gain the edge by the fourth quarter to outscore the Altitude 23-12.

The Flight, who scored many of their points from the charity stripe, attempted 35 to Asheville's 12.

"They just played better than we did," said Asheville head coach Joey Meyer. "Their bench played better than we did, especially in the fourth quarter, and we just couldn't match it."

Neither team shot well from the 3-point line as Asheville went 0-of-12 from behind the arc and Huntsville connected on only 2-of-11 shots for 18.2%. Huntsville out-shot the Altitude from the field, shooting 32-of-79 shots while Asheville registered only 32-of-92 (40.5%) baskets.

Desmond Penigar and Brandon Kurtz led five Altitude players scoring in double figures with 12 points apiece. Kurtz also grabbed nine rebounds. Kris Lang added 11 points and five rebounds and Gary Williams chipped in 10 points and two assists. Asheville got a lift on the boards from Antonio Meeking who pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.

Former NBA player Mateen Cleaves of Huntsville led all scorers with 17 points, four rebounds and four assists. Marcus Fleming contributed a double-double for Huntsville, posting 16 points and 10 rebounds. Ronald DuPree added 10 rebounds, eight points and four assists.

The win keeps Huntsville undefeated and at the top of the NBDL standings with a 3-0 record while the Altitude drops to 1-1. Asheville returns to action, Tuesday, Dec. 2, against the Charleston Lowgators (0-2). The game, highlighted as Toys for Tots day at the Asheville Civic Center, provides fans a $3 discount on an adult-priced ticket with the donation of a toy.

"You like to open at home with a win," said Reid. "But hopefully we can come out on Tuesday and play harder and get that win."
