Huntsville Flight News Release
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Feb. 4, 2003) â The Huntsville Flight had just one lead over the Mobile Revelers here Tuesday afternoon, but it was the only one that counts.
Jermaine Walker sank a 21-foot jumper from the top of the key with 3.6 seconds left to lift Huntsville to the 74-73 NBDL victory over the first-place Revelers, capping a late Flight run in the contest.
"That was a big shot, because of the slump we have been in over the last five games," Walker said. "Coach (Lewis) put me in a situation where I had to hit the shot. I didn't think -- just grabbed the ball and shot. Fortunately, it went in and turned out to be a big win for us."
The Flight (16-16) trailed 73-67 with 1:17 to play after Isaac Fontaine nailed a 3-pointer to give the visitors a seven-point spread. Lonnie Harrell, though, hit consecutive 3-pointers in the final minute as the Revelers committed two turnovers down the stretch. Harrell finished the contest tallying a game-high 24 points.
Gerald Walker had a chance to win it for the Revelers but his shot as time expired from 26-feet rattled off the rim.
Mobile dominated the game early as they led by 14 after a quarter at 25-11. The Revelers (17-13) actually led 66-49 â a 17-point advantage -- after Jeremy Veal hit a 3-pointer to start the final period, by the Flight outscored the visitors 25-10 over the final 10 minutes.
"This is a disappointing loss because we played well enough to win," Revelers coach Sam Vincent said. "We just didn't execute down the stretch in any facet of the game. Give Huntsville credit they fought hard, came back and pulled it out."
Harrell, who came off the bench for only the second time in his NBDL 88-game career, led two other Flight players off the bench in double figures as Walker added 12 and Demetric Shaw tossed in 10.
Fontaine led the Revelers with 20 points, as Cedric Henderson tallied 13, along with 10 apiece from Derek Hood and Veal.
For Huntsville coach Ralph Lewis, who has seen his team struggle as of late, it was a game for his team to build.
"We keep it exciting don't we," Lewis said. "I'll tell you I am frustrated with how we started the ball game both defensively and offensively. We dug ourselves a hole and it makes it tough to come back. But we showed resilience and came back. Now we need to play for 40 minutes on a more consistent basis."
