
Flight Coach Ralph Lewis to Host Youth Basketball Camp

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., May 6, 2002 â Huntsville Flight assistant coach and member of the 1987-88 Eastern Conference Champion Detroit Pistons Ralph Lewis will conduct a youth basketball camp in Huntsville, June 10-14, 2002. The camp, which will be held at the Optimist Recreation Center daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., is for youth ages 8-16 and will feature special appearances by celebrities from the worlds of basketball, sports fitness and nutrition.
"The main focus of the clinic is to teach kids the fundamentals of basketball and improve their overall performance and skills," said Lewis. "Kids of all skill levels will be able to participate in many fun and rewarding drills and games."
The cost for the camp is $130 for the week and includes lunch and beverages daily. Each child who attends the camp will receive an official Ralph Lewis Youth Basketball Camp T-shirt and a certificate of completion. In addition, trophies will be awarded for various accomplishments throughout the week.

Camp participants, who will be grouped into teams by age and skill level, will learn and practice the fundamentals of shooting, passing, rebounding, and defense. Each day teams will participate in games so campers can apply what they have learned.
The NBDL's Huntsville Flight is the presenting sponsor for the camp along with co-sponsors Optimist Recreation Center, Coca-Cola, Chick-fil-A, and the City of Huntsville Recreation Services.
The NBDL, the NBA's minor league, includes the Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), North Charleston Lowgators (S.C.), Huntsville Flight (Ala.), Mobile Revelers (Ala.), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.), Columbus Riverdragons (Ga.), Greenville Groove (S.C.), and Asheville Altitude (N.C.). The league offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA's umbrella. Eight NBDL players were called up to the NBA during the NBDL's inaugural season. The NBDL serves as a source of on-court talent for the NBA's 29 teams and as a diverse human resources pool for the NBA and its teams by training employees in management, operations, public relations, sales and marketing positions in each NBDL city. About Coach Ralph Lewis
Lewis rejoined the NBA family on September 18, 2001 as the assistant coach for the Huntsville Flight. Lewis' 10-year professional playing career took him through the minor leagues and international arena and onto the NBA where he was a member of the 1987-88 Eastern Conference Champion Detroit Pistons. Lewis, who played three seasons in the NBA, appeared in a career-high 50 games with the Eastern Conference Champion Pistons, before being selected by Charlotte in the 1988 NBA Expansion Draft. Lewis played 99 career NBA games with Detroit and Charlotte. He averaged 15.6 points per game and 8.3 rebounds per game on .530 shooting throughout his collegiate career at LaSalle University. After graduating, Lewis was selected in the sixth round of the 1985 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics. His professional career includes three seasons in the CBA, where he averaged 17.1 ppg and 5.4 rpg, and stints in professional basketball leagues in France and Canada. In 1997-98, Lewis served as an assistant coach for the NBA's Sacramento Kings.
