Odessa Jackalopes News Release
ODESSA, TX - In the first of a two-game weekend series, the Odessa Jackalopes scrapped their way to a 2-1 deficit through two periods, but ultimately succumbed to the defending Robertson Cup champion Texas Tornado 6-1 on Friday at Ector County Coliseum. With the loss, the Jackalopes' season-long seventh in a row, Odessa fell to 4-17-2 overall this season and with 10 points, remain alone in sixth place in the NAHL's South Division standings.
After a tight-checking, scoreless first period, Texas broke the ice at 3:34 of the second when Justin Greenberg netted his tenth goal of the season on a feed from Scott Conway to make it 1-0 Tornado. The Odessa response was nearly instantaneous, however, as Pat Thompson tapped home a Zane Popilock feed just eight seconds later, Thompson's fourth tally of the season, to tie the game at one. Then, at 8:08 of the middle frame, Conway notched the first of his two goals on the night and second of three points to give Texas a 2-1 edge entering the third.
After a sluggish start to the final period for Odessa, the Tornado rattled off four unanswered goals in the final stanza, from Andrew Mayer, Brandon Hawkins, Conway and Cameron Brown, respectively to establish the Tornado's 6-1 margin of victory. In his fourth consecutive start in net for Odessa, York, Pennsylvania native Phil Heinle was workmanlike, gutting his way to a 37 save performance that was littered with both pedestrian and spectacular stops.
Next up for the Jacks, it's a Saturday rematch with the Tornado with the opening faceoff set for 7:05 pm at Ector County Coliseum.
In 2012-13, the Odessa Jackalopes drop the puck on their second season as a member of the North American Hockey League.
