Western New York Flash News Release
Elma, N.Y. (Sunday, April 14, 2013) - The Western New York Flash have announced that it has signed forward Laura Heyboer. Heyboer returns to the Flash after being an integral part of the 2012 WSPL-Elite Championship team.
In 2012, Heyboer and the Flash won the WPSL-Elite Championship with a 2-1 penalty kick defeat of the Chicago Red Stars. The Flash have won the past three championships, playing in three different leagues.
The team will now look for it's fourth-consecutive league title, kicking off the 2013 NWSL season Sunday night at 6 p.m. WNY travels to face Sky Blue FC on the campus of Rutgers University, with the game to be streamed live on YouTube.
Entering as a substitute, Heyboer scored the game-winning goal in the WPSL-Elite semifinal. Her goal sent the Flash past the New York Fury and into the championship match.
The Michigan native was a third round pick in the first-ever NWSL supplemental draft, taken by the Seattle Reign with its third pick. The 2012 graduate of Michigan State has been a member of three US Women's National teams, playing on the U-15, U-17 and U-23 squads throughout her career.
Heyboer left Michigan State as the College's all-time leader in goals (57) and points (139), while becoming the first freshman to win Big 10 Offensive Player of the Year in 2008. Just one of four players to be named to the All-Big 10 for all four years, Heyboer led all Division I schools with 18 goals during her senior campaign.
